Our plan for the General Election

Liberal Youth are very excited to present #WinningHere, our largest ever General Election campaign. We’ll be packing our bags and travelling up and down the country to help elect Liberal Democrat MPs, as well as hitting the phones in the run up to the election. For our action weekends we will be funding accommodation, transport and food to enable young members to travel to target seats to campaign for some of our most brilliant candidates. As well as lots of campaigning, the weekends will all have Saturday night socials – giving members the chance to get to know not only each other but the lovely locations you visit!

So far we have announced six action weekends to be held in the New Year, and a few weeks ago we held a pilot weekend in Cardiff, campaigning for the wonderful Jenny Willott, which you can read about here. There are still more weekends to be announced, but we’re very proud to say that four of our seven current target seats have female candidates.

Campaigning with Jenny in Cardiff

The weekends we’re revealing today are:

31st Jan/1st Feb: campaigning for Stephen Williams MP in Bristol West

28th Feb/1st Mar: campaigning for Lynne Featherstone MP in Hornsey and Wood Green

7th/8th Mar: campaigning for Layla Moran in Oxford West and Abingdon

28th/29th Mar: campaigning for Steve Bradley in Bath

4th/5th Apr: campaigning for Mike Crockart MP in Edinburgh West

11th/12th Apr:  campaigning for Lorely Burt MP in Solihull

18th/19th Apr:  campaigning for Julian Huppert MP in Cambridge

All of these weekends are now on our events page where you can find more information about them, and the links to register for each weekend. It's essential that you register via Eventbrite if you want us to provide accommodation and reimburse travel.

In the run up to the general election, we'll be travelling to these constituencies as well as hitting the phones to support them. It’s important to us to help to elect lots of great Lib Dem MPs who care deeply about the issues we do, like Stephen who put forward a bill for votes at 16 and Lynne who pushed to bring same sex marriage into law, and campaign for candidates whose constituencies have large young and student populations, like Layla in Oxford and Julian in Cambridge.

We also hope this will be a great way to bring together our members and particularly to engage people who have not come to Liberal Youth events before.  When we surveyed our members last month, one of the most cited things we could do differently to encourage attendance was to hold events closer to people. With action weekends in the North of England still to be confirmed and dates being released well in advance, we hope the locations we have chosen will enable all our members to attend at least one weekend. In addition, if travel costs are more than our normal travel budget we have a special fund you can apply to. No one should be left out because of where they live.

We know that no other political party will stand up for the liberal values that young people believe in: whether it was delivering same sex marriage, protecting your online privacy, campaigning for an evidence based drugs policy, working to close the gender pay gap or putting mental health care on the political agenda. So we hope to see lots of you on the campaign trail and join you phoning from home in the next few months as we fight to make sure we still have strong liberal voices in parliament at the end of 2015.
