Buying your first home was once a milestone young people could expect to celebrate.
Now, young people don't dare to dream of owning a home.
The housing ladder has been pulled up. We've been priced out of even reaching the first rung. All because demand exceeds supply. It's time to start building.
4,000,000 homes are needed in England alone according to the National Housing Federation. And there are simple solutions! Building on just 3.7% of London's Green Belt would result in a million homes.
The Housing Crisis affects us all in different ways. Young parents can't afford the quality housing their children need. Young people and students have no option but to enter into expensive and exploitative rent agreements - even spending more than half of their income on rent. We're forced to choose or lose jobs based on where we can and can't afford to live.
Cramped conditions, wasted pay packets, and an assetless generation - all because the Government refuses to act.
The Young Liberals have a plan to build Britain's homes of tomorrow:
Building homes for the future
We must build homes to last. We propose empowering local authorities to compel developers to include eco-friendly features such as electric vehicle charge points in new developments.
Allowing cities to expand
The green belt prohibits meaningful development around large cities - exactly where young people must go for employment. The Young Liberals oppose policies of urban containment.
End opposition to necessary developments
We call for an end to opposing developments in areas with a high price- income ratio, and the support of new developments where they're needed most. Building on 3.7% of London's green belt in walking distance of a station would result in a million homes.
Help to Rent and Rent to Own
We would establish a 'Help to Rent' scheme to help pay tenancy deposits for all first-time renters under 30 and a 'Rent to Own' model where rent payments contribute to home ownership.
The time for Labour and Tory inaction on the housing crisis is over.
Help us make a home for Generation Rent.
