Liberal Democrats adopt Young Liberals campaign points on AI safety and covert filming

The Young Liberals have welcomed the Liberal Democrats’ adoption of two new campaign points on artificial intelligence and covert filming, following the Young Liberals Conference in Manchester from 14–16 August 2026.

Young Liberals Conference adopted 15 new policies. Two of these policies have now been taken forward by the Liberal Democrats as campaign points, a major success for the Young Liberals and their members.

The covert filming policy responds to reports of women being recorded without their knowledge using smart glasses and similar devices. It calls for stronger restrictions on covert filming technology, including clearly identifiable recording capabilities, safeguards against concealed or disabled recording indicators, and legal duties on companies to address foreseeable harms.

The AI policy calls for urgent regulation of AI companies, including tested emergency shutdown procedures, mandatory reporting of serious incidents, an Ofcom-enforced regulatory framework, and dedicated GCHQ and NCSC funding to monitor autonomous AI threats.

The policies follow recent reports on the risks posed by smart glasses and advanced AI systems operating beyond their intended safeguards.

The Young Liberals are calling on Liberal Democrats across the country to support these campaign points and help make technology safer, more accountable and more consistent with liberal values.
