Our Women's Rep to Diversity Committee, Abi, asked some of our YL members to tell us about inspirational women in their lives, to mark International Women's Day 2023:

Aaminah: Racial Equity, Diversity and Liberation Officer:

Maya Angelou is a woman who inspires me tremendously. Her poetry and writing are works of art where she speaks beautifully about her experiences with discrimination and power. Her legacy on the civil rights movement includes being a tireless advocate for African Americans and working with leaders like Malcolm X and MLK Jr.

Abi, Women's Rep to Diversity Committee: An inspirational woman in my life is undoubtedly my mum. She raised me to be fearlessly myself and gives the best advice.

Rebecca, Policy Officer: Mary Reginer-Wilson has been a real inspiration to me for a long time. She’s been really encouraging with me running for council the year before and whenever I’ve had an issue inside the Lib Dem’s she’s been more than happy to help. It was really amazing meeting her in person at the Young Liberals conference where I got to hear about her record of success!

Lucy, Accessibility, Diversity and Standards Officer: Lizzo has inspired me to completely change the way I view myself. She is unapologetically herself in both her music and her advocacy, in the face of constant criticism. Lizzo is a proud fat, black woman who uses her platform to empower other women to feel comfortable & confident in their own skin and to amplify marginalised voices at every opportunity.
